SPORTS AND P.E.

What is our aim with Physical Education at Springfield? (Intent)

Our PE curriculum, through Complete PE, aims to ensure that all pupils participate in a range of physical activities to develop their competence, activity levels, engagement in competitive sport and to encourage leading healthy, active lives. The school PE curriculum includes a wide variety of physical activities: team games, individual games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, problem solving and swimming. Through these, we aim to increase pupils’ physical literacy by developing their enjoyment of physical activity and recognition of their success, as they develop their physical skills alongside the skills of communication, collaboration and competition.

What does this look like in our classrooms? (Implementation)

A clear progression of skills is implemented for pupils from Years 3 to Year 6. Skills, knowledge and vocabulary are revisited within lessons and built upon to ensure that pupils make, or exceed expected progress. Through units of work across the school, objectives and vocabulary are explicitly taught and understanding is developed through key questions and practical activity.

How do we support learners?
We strive to meet the needs of all pupils, whatever their ability or level of need. Children have the right to progress and reach their potential. By adapting our teaching of Physical Education, we support the needs of those children who have disabilities, English as an additional language or special gifts and talents.

We use the Complete PE assessment resources to identify which pupils are making progress and are able to meet the expected standard for individual year groups.

We offer opportunities for pupils to deepen their knowledge, understanding, skills and ability in PE through:

  • A progressive long-term plan.
  • Lessons within units adapted for differentiation and through listening to pupil voice.
  • A range of extra-curricular clubs.
  • Links with the wider community.
  • Participation in intra/inter school competitions.
  • Utilisation of the PE and School Sport Premium.

Learner groups, including EAL and Pupil Premium, can be analysed through school data and relevant action taken to ensure that all groups are catered for appropriately. For example, opportunities to participate in clubs.

We work in partnership with Ipswich Town Foundation to support the teaching and learning of PE in the school.

What are the outcomes for learners? (Impact)

Our Physical Education curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression, through a range of activities, with the aim of creating a positive learning environment for children to develop their emotional, physical and mental engagement in physical activity and sport.

  • Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning; skills, vocabulary, knowledge.
  • Observation/photos/videos of the children’s practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.
  • Formative assessment (Insight website).
  • Data from extra-curricular clubs/events/competitions.
  • Data from School Games and IPSSA competitions and events.

Curriculum Enrichment

Squash
We maintain close links with Ipswich Sports Centre, Emily and her coaching staff to allow all our pupils to experience learning and playing squash (Autumn Term - Years 5 & 6 and Spring Term - Years 3 & 4) and enable our staff to work alongside the coaches to develop their own teaching skills.

Squash – Saxon Cup Competition

As a culmination of curriculum and extra-curricular squash sessions, twenty-three of our Year 5 and 6 pupils were selected to represent Springfield Junior School.

Huge congratulations to our teams, who took part in the Squash Saxon Cup at Ipswich Sports Centre in competition with three other schools.

They were great ambassadors for the school and the standard of squash was fantastic – so many rallies!

Team 1 in Year 5 won the Year 5 competition over all and received medals, certificates and a team trophy.

Rebecca won most points scored out of all the Year 5 girls and Honor won most improved player out of all the Year 6 girls across the schools.

All team members received a T-Shirt and certificate of participation, as well as an invitation to receive 6 free squash lessons at Ipswich Sports Centre, followed by a reduced price if they wish to continue after the 6 weeks.

Keep playing as you are all developing such amazing skills and tactical awareness!

Well done to you all!!
